Smoothie Hack
Does anyone else think that smoothies are NOT a great way to save time on a busy morning?
I love smoothies! And they can be an incredible way to boost your nutrient intake and get your greens! But I always chuckle when I read an article or hear someone talking about how smoothies are a “quick and easy” breakfast.
They must not be drinking my kind of smoothie, because it literally takes me 10 to 15 minutes to prep and get all of my ingredients into the damned blender cup! That's not fast OR easy! Sure, 10 minutes may not seem like much time...but when I'm trying to get my kid out of bed, fed, hair brushed (dreadful!), and off to school...every minute counts!
Since I’m not willing to change my smoothie recipe (which I included below) my solution has been to prep the night before, usually while I’m also cooking dinner. I add all of my “dry” ingredients to the cup, cap it, and store it in the freezer overnight. All I have to do in the morning is add the almond or cashew milk and hit the blend button!
Yeah, it still requires the prep time. But I find that shifting the prep work to a time when I’m already in the kitchen (making dinner), also makes it more likely I’ll stick to my healthy smoothie routine...while I'm in there, I might as well prep lunches for the next day too!
Below is my Chocolate Spice Green Smoothie recipe that I drink on a workout day. On a non-workout day, I simply omit the banana in favor of a tablespoon of almond butter or ¼ of an avocado.
Chocolate Spice Green Smoothie
- ½ banana, preferably green
- ½ cup blueberries
- Kale, spinach, microgreens, chard, or beet greens
- 1 scoop chocolate or vanilla egg white protein powder
- 1 T powdered peanut butter
- 1 T hemp or chia seeds
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional…if you like chocolate spice!)
- 1 cup of unsweetened almond or cashew milk
- Extra water if smoothie is too thick
- A few ice cubes if desired
The night before, add all ingredients to your blender cup in the order listed, except nut milk, water, and ice cubes. Store cup in the freezer overnight. In the morning, add wet ingredients and blend until smooth!
